Devizes Chamber Choir

Summer Concert

The summer concert took place at St Andrew’s Church, Devizes on Tuesday, June 3rd 2009. The concert was aptly named “Atlantic Bridge”. The first part being a group of songs by English composers; whilst the second part featured American composers.

Some firm favourites were included in the performance which took many of those singing and listening back to their childhood days. Linden Lea was particularly popular.  Recorder duets were interspersed in the programme played by Michael Oliver and Lesley Groves.

The first half included songs by Elgar, R Vaughan Williams, Sir Frederick Bridge, JL Hatton, Joseph Banby and Sir Arthur Sullivan. The first song “As torrents in summer” was happily not applicable to the warm and sunny June evening.

Aaron Copeland, an American pianist and composer, provided five songs in the second half. They were published in 1952 for a solo voice and arranged in four parts by Irving Fine. Included were  a Shaker song, a ballad, a children’s song and a hymn tune – something for all.

The final song was the hauntingly beautiful “Autumn leaves”, music by Joseph Kosma and arranged by Andrew Carter. George and Ira Gershwin’s “I got rhythm” was the encore and a popular choice too.
